Unprecedented Surge in Music Uploads:

According to Luminate, an average of 120,000 International Standard Recording Codes (ISRCs), representing new music audio files, were added to music streaming services every day in Q1 2023. 

This translates to an astounding total of 10.08 million fresh tracks uploaded to platforms like Spotify, YouTube Music, and others during the first three months of the year.

Comparing these numbers to the previous year, Luminate's report highlights a significant increase. 

In 2022, an average of 93,400 tracks were uploaded daily, amounting to a total of 34.1 million tracks for the entire year. 

This indicates a notable rise of 12% year-on-year (YoY) compared to the 30.5 million tracks released in 2021.

With the current rate of 120,000 daily track uploads projected to continue throughout the year, Luminate estimates that by the end of 2023, a staggering 43 million new tracks will have flooded streaming services such as Spotify.

A recent report by CNM has shined a spotight on the prevalence of illegitimate streaming practices in the French music industry. 

The report suggests that at least 1%-3% of music streams in the country are fraudulent and generated through paid-for stream farms. These streams are generated by "bad actors" who want to siphon royalty money away from legitimate artists.

The CNM study analyzed a vast set of data provided by Spotify, Deezer, and Qobuz, as well as a panel of distributors, including Universal, Sony, Warner, Believe, and Wagram. 

The study found that music distributed by these companies represented more than 90% of the top 10,000 most listened-to titles on Spotify and more than 75% of the overall volume of streams on Deezer.

The report estimates that between 1 billion and 3 billion streams in France in 2021 were fraudulent. If we apply this threshold to wider industry value figures, the streaming fraud problem becomes clear. 

The French music market in 2021 generated EUR €492 million (USD $581.5m) in streaming revenues annually, and 1% of that figure would be €4.92 million ($5.8m), while 3% would be €14.76 million ($17.4m). 

If we apply the same figures globally, one percent would be $169 million, and three percent would be over half a billion dollars.

It is worth noting that the CNM report only considered fraudulent streams detected by the platforms and eliminated from the sharing of royalties. The actual number of fraudulent streams may be much bigger than the reported figure.

The study also found that hip-hop/rap music represented 84.5% of fraudulent streams detected among Spotify's top 10,000 tracks during 2021. 

This is to be expected since hip-hop is the dominant genre in the French market. However, compared to the total number of streams generated by hip-hop and rap in 2021, fraudulent streams represented a small share of the genre's total listens, with a 0.4% share on Spotify and 0.7% on Deezer.

The study claims that the market share of streams detected as fraudulent on total plays of other specific genres was significantly higher for the likes of background music (4.8% on Deezer) and 'non-musical titles' (3.5%).

The CNM has called out Amazon Music, YouTube, and Apple Music for declining to participate or supply data for the study. These platforms were "unable or unwilling to share their data according to the defined observation perimeter, despite all the guarantees of confidentiality that the CNM provided them."

This report highlights the need for the music industry to take a more proactive approach to tackling fraudulent streaming practices. Legitimate artists deserve to be compensated fairly for their hard work, and it is the responsibility of music platforms and distributors to ensure that they are not being ripped off by "bad actors."

As of 2022, Spotify's all-time payouts to the music industry are approaching $40 billion, which includes both recording and publishing royalties. Earning Potential for Bootstrapped Artists:

Spotify reported that in 2022, 10,100 artists generated at least $100,000 on the platform alone, up from 4,300 artists five years ago. These artists come from more than 100 different countries worldwide, and streaming has lowered barriers to entry. 

Artists who, in the past, might have struggled for opportunities, are now finding their audiences. Additionally, 57,000 artists generated more than $10,000 on the platform in 2022, up from 23,400 in 2017. Of these artists, nearly 20,000 live in countries outside the IFPI's Top 10 music markets. These figures represent revenue generated from Spotify alone. Spotify has become a bellwether for all of podcasting as it incorporated networks and multiplied the number of shows on its platform. 

Despite spending billions and drawing in podcast listeners, Spotify has struggled to monetize its investment and recently laid off a number of workers in its podcast arm.

The number of people using music streaming services will reach 616.2 million by the end of 2022, according to a new report by Midia Research.

This is up 17.6% from the 523.9 million global subscribers Midia counted at the same time in 2021 (see chart above).

It may not have been as significant a slowdown as many feared... especially amid this year's wider macroeconomic pressures... but the YoY subs growth margin (+92.3m) slowed compared to the same increase in the prior year (+109.5m).

China might be a factor: Tencent Music Entertainment (TME) overtook Amazon Music in Q4 2021, according to Midia.

As of Q2 2022, TME had 82.7 million subscribers, representing 13.4% of the global market.

Although Spotify's market share has steadily declined, it still holds a global share of music streaming subs (30.5%), down from 33.2% in 2018.

Analysts argue that Spotify’s market share decline “has much to do with the growth of the Chinese market (where Spotify does not operate)”.

Among Spotify's rivals in the music streaming market, Amazon Music has 82.2 million subscribers, while YouTube Music has 55.1 million.

Apple Music continues its long-term trend of underperformance, with an estimated 84.7 million subscribers registering 13.8% market share, down 1.2%.

For the first time in a single year, music audio streams in the United States surpassed one trillion streams.

According to US market monitor Luminate (formerly MRC Data / Nielsen Music), the 1 trillion mark was crossed on Saturday (November 26).

Luminate data also expressed the number of music audio streams in the US increased by 11.9 billion over 2021, when the figure was 988.1 billion.

It's also 7x more than the 142.9 billion music audio streams recorded in the US in 2015, according to Luminate data.

A trillion streams of US music audio in 2022 means music listeners have spent about 960,000 years streaming music.

Latin music had its most successful streaming week ever in the US on May 12, 2022 with 1.8 billion streams. This was the first time Latin music outstreamed Country music in a single week in the US, thanks largely to Bad Bunny's now Grammy-nominated album Un Verano sin Ti.

During the first half of 2022, according to Luminate, music audio streaming was up +24.7% around the world (across global territories). which showed that streaming revenues grew 10%, from $5.9 billion in H1 2021 to $6.5 billion in the first half of 2022.

Caribbean music metric service Certifiedstreams.com has data dropped its list of the Caricom region's top 20 Spotify Music Earners in 2022.

Spotify is regarded as the world's largest digital music audio streaming service 

The list was compiled using estimated data points provided by BMAT, considered one of the music industry's fasting growing music metric data providers.

INEFFABLE Records, a California-based Reggae-focused label, racked up 1.1 billion Spotify streams in 2022, surpassing VP Records to become Reggae's #1 Independent Digital Music Distributor.

Approximately 1.8 billion Spotify streams were generated by the Reggae genre in 2022 according to Caribbean music metrics service Certifiedstreams.

Based on INEFFABLE's 1.1 billion streams, it would hold 55% of the active digital reggae market, and has made significant in roads within the Caribbean music space, with a bevy of hits from Collie Buddz, KES, Anthony B, Demarco, Konshens, and Turbulence to name a few.

Under the leadership of CEO Thomas Cussins, Adam Gross INEFFABLE has shown a lot of growth over the past three years, with a near 50% year-over-year increase in streaming numbers since 2019, when 392 million Spotify streams were harvested.

In 2020 the label was placed behind the Universal Music as Reggae' biggest distributor.

Founded in 2006, the three pronged music group comprises of INEFFABLE LIVE, INEFFABLE MANAGEMENT, and INEFFABLE Records, and is based in Oakland, California.

There are currently 18 stellar acts currently signed to the label, including Collie Buddz, Iya Terra, J Boog, Stick Figure, The Elovators, and homegrown artist Jesse Royal, and according to its official website INEFFABLE Live produces close to 1000 concerts a year, and is in active partnership with a number of premium music festivals on the US west coast.

Global recorded music body IFPI has launched the ‘Official MENA Chart’, which it calls the first-ever official chart in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

The IFPI says that the chart captures music streaming services includings Anghami, Apple, Deezer, Spotify and Youtube from 13 markets across the MENA region, from Morocco in the West to UAE in the East – covering more than 300 million people.

The track Calm Down by Nigerian artist Rema has scored the first ever MENA Chart No.1.

According to the IFPI, recorded music market revenues in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region grew by 35% in 2021 – the fastest-growing region in the world.

The figures also showed that streaming represented some 95.3% of recorded music revenues in the region in 2021.

Following today’s chart launch, the regional top 20 tracks will be announced every Tuesday.

The Post-Covid music business has turned out to be a very challenging one for Reggae worldwide.

Certifiedstreams.com, the Caribbean-based music metrics service that tracks Reggae-related music data, has shared some very interesting insights to be included in its upcoming year-in-review report released each December.

Afrobeat continues to gormandise the Reggae market.

According to the data drop provided, Reggae music's global 2018 market share of 1.7%, has slimmed to 0.85% in 2022.

Afrobeat reported a 0.75% market share in 2018 which over the last four years has grown by almost 50% and is due to close 2022 at 1.2%.

As of Nov 2022, 8,300+ Reggae artists generated 1.1 Billion Spotify streams, 3.1 Billion Youtube views and 1.2 Million Radio Spins worldwide.

This is in comparison to the 4,300+ Afrobeat artists who generated 832 Million Spotify Streams, 2 Billion Youtube Views and 180,000 radio spins during the same period.

According to MIDia research group, Spotify reflected a 31% market share in 2021, with Youtube holding 8%.

Collectively they control 39% of the music streaming market.

Based on estimations by Certfiedstreams, the expected global streaming revenue for Reggae worldwide in 2022 is around USD24.59 Million.

Annual data has shown that the 90% lion's share of Spotify's streaming revenue is distributed to the genre's top 1%.

This leaves an estimated USD2.459 Million for the remaining 8,217 "professionally recognized artists" to split, but that also comes with its own set of variables to calculate.

341 festivals and concerts were slated in 2022. 

A 9.5% decrease compared to pre-covid numbers of 377 in 2018.

Europe accounted for 245 events or 39% of all Reggae live festivals, with North America accounting for just 70, followed by South America with a distant 8. 

Events in Oceania and Australia increased in 2022 to 9, up from 7 in 2018.

However, of the 341 slated in 2022, 187 reported an audience of less than 5,000 patrons.

Reggae has 5 commercially recognized sub-genres. Roots Reggae, Dancehall, Ska, Dub, and Reggae Fusion.

Roots Reggae reported the largest number of recognized music professionals with 3,700 artists, followed by Dancehall's 2,200 and Reggae Fusions' 1,000+.

Dancehall outpaced its counterparts this year on Youtube.

The sub-genre generated 323.6 Million Spotify Streams, 292,000 Radio Spins and 1.9 Billion or 61% of Reggae's 3.1 Billion views in 2022.

Roots Reggae continues to dominate Spotify and radio, generating 543.1 Million Spotify Streams, 580 Million Youtube Views,  and 720,000 of the reported 1.2 Million radio spins in 2022.

Reggae Fusion gained traction on terrestrial radio this year globally and reflected impressive growth on youtube. However, it continues to be outpaced by Dancehall on Spotify.

The sub-genre contributed a decent haul of 178 Million Spotify streams, 576 Million Youtube Views, and 274,000 radio spins to Global Reggae's 2022 Digital Streaming haul.

Pandora, the US-based music streaming service that once had over 81 million monthly listeners, now has fewer than 50 million.

The news was confirmed by Pandora’s parent, SiriusXM, in the latter company’s Q3 2022 earnings results, as announced on November 1, 2022.

SiriusXM acquired Pandora in a $3.5 billion all-stock deal in February 2019.

According to SiriusXM, as of September 30, 2022, Pandora counted 48.77 million monthly active users (MAUs).

That was down by over 3.8 million on the 52.62 million MAUs that were using Pandora in 2021.

There was better news for Pandora in Q3 2022 in terms of its advertising revenues. which grew 1% YoY to $407 million in the quarter, despite a macro-digital advertising market that is notably softening as the year goes on.

Recently the Jamaica Broadcast Commission's pronouncement of its ban on songs related to "Molly, Scamming, and Gun Violence" has created an uproar among homegrown music professionals.

The general consensus is that the regulation is a "new attack" on Jamaican music.

However, once properly interpreted, the regulations are not limited to Jamaican music only.

Reggaeologist Lloyd Laing highlighted via twitter :- "Real Dancehall Music is not created to be played on radio..it’s created to be played in the DANCEHALL..if radio takes the risk to play a DANCEHALL song it’s a choice..but real dancehall is not created for radio.."

Via twitter DM in a brief conversation he further stated that despite the vocal dissatisfaction, the ban was not just for Dancehall music, but for ALL songs that breach the new regulations.

"Songs like Weekends I Can't Feel My Face fall into the broadcasting commission's new regulatory net, as well as a slew of songs from mainstream music that make references to the banned themes.", stated Laing.

But the writer was also duly reminded that this debate is as old as Mento.

With close to 30+ terrestrial radio stations on radio, less that ten play 50% or more local Reggae music, and of those with a dedicated format the number dwindles down to 3 or four.

Regardless of this age old problem, the recent changes have re-ignited a a fresh haggle surrounding the Jamaican governments recognition of Dancehall's transistion from a cornered space for poor people's music into a globally influencial contender within today's mainstream media.

SoundCloud just launched a new creator dashboard and a new name for its artist services platform, now dubbed SoundCloud for Artists.

‘SoundCloud for Artists’ was formerly known as ‘Repost’ which SoundCloud acquired in May 2019 for around $15 million.

Following the acquisition of Repost, in April 2020, SoundCloud launched its Repost by SoundCloud marketing and distribution platform. At the time, it said that it was aimed at “serious artists who want to take their career to the next level”.

Now, all of that has been reborn as ‘SoundCloud for Artists’. The rebranded services platform was announced on Thursday (October 13) by Tracy Chan, SoundCloud’s Senior Vice President of Creator, and former Head of Music at Twitch.

YouTube’s 12-month payouts to the music industry between July 2021 and June 2022 rose to $6 billion, up 50% from the $4 billion it reported in June of 2021.

YouTube says it’s on track to surpass Spotify as the top contributor of music industry revenue by 2025. Spotify reported that it had paid musicians and the industry $7 billion in 2021.

“This significant uplift in payments from YouTube through to the wider music industry is very positive news for artists and songwriters in a time of economic uncertainty and rising touring costs,” said Annabella Coldrick, Chief Executive, Music Managers Forum.

However, it has been suggested that YouTube needs to tighten up where their payments are sent. The report included detailed allegations that YouTube’s rights-management system is “full of errors” and “ripe for abuse.”

Today (July 25), then, is a big day: Meta has just announced that it is changing the way artists and music rightsholders are going to be paid from Facebook – and that it WILL now be moving to a ‘revenue-share’ model for user-generated video content.

Whether the music industry is united in being happy with the size of that revenue share, of course, is yet to be seen.

(Lest we forget, in a potentially unrelated – but also potentially related – move, Kobalt Music Publishing just pulled its 700,000 songs off Instagram and Facebook in the US, having failed to agree a new licensing deal with Meta).

Here’s how the new system works: Meta has confirmed that video creators who choose to use licensed music in videos over 60 seconds long on Facebook will receive a 20% share of any advertising revenue generated by their creation.

The remaining 80% of that advertising revenue will then be split between the appropriate music rightsholders and Meta itself.

What’s the nature of that split? We don’t yet know – Meta hasn’t confirmed it.

Interestingly, it also means that users on Facebook – including influencers with lots of followers on the platform – have suddenly become monetarily incentivized (via their 20% share) to promote licensed music they love in their posts.

Legendary Dancehall DJ Merciless, was found unresponsive in a Kingston hotel this afternoon in Jamaica.

Efforts to revive the Artiste was unsuccessful, and the man born Lennard Bailey was pronounced dead shortly after.

Known as a formidable soundclash artiste, he made his debut in 1992 on the B side of Jigsy King's "G&G" as Sugar Demus with the single "War Between Matie & Matie", before switching  to his infamous moniker "Merciless" in 1994, which would also be his breakout year.

He would deliver a slew of hits for Stone Love Records and Annex Records, but literally worked with every label that was available throughout the 90's to early 2000's, and along the way created a catalog of over 300 commercial releases and over 270 feature appearances.

"Ole Gallis", "War Zone", "Dorothy", "Mavis", "Gun From Paris", "Gizada", "Man Confuse" are just a fistful of over 20+ bonafide local hits he delivered in his lifetime from his catalog.

His death comes as a shock to the Jamaican music community at home and aboard and signals the loss of another talented homegrown legend whose name and voice will remain forever dear in the ears and hearts of fans worldwide.

Downtown Music Services has entered into a new agreement with Jamaica-headquartered music company Geejam Music, which includes Geejam Studios in Port Antonio, Jamaica.

According to a statement announcing the news, this global deal will see Downtown Music Services provide “funded music publishing administration and label services” for Geejam Music’s existing catalog and roster of songwriters and producers.

Jon Baker, the former President of Island Jamaica first opened Geejam Studios in Port Antonio, Jamaica in 1998.

Baker’s own Gee Street Records label enjoyed successes from the likes of PM Dawn, The RZA, The Jungle Brothers, Queen Latifa and The Stereo MCs in the 1980’s and 1990’s.

Geejam Studios now claims to have become the “premier” residential recording facility in the region.

The facility hosts sessions, writing camps and retreats for the likes of Drake, Harry Styles and recently Megan Thee Stallion, Sam Smith and The Rolling Stones to name a few.

Universal Music Group, via its Universal Music Production Music division, has quietly launched a new sample service called Usample.

The major music company filed for a US trademark application for Usample in October 2021.

According to the Usample website, the service offers a catalog of around 7,000 “rare” tracks, that, Universal says, come “from the depths of the [UMG] archive, digitised for the first time since the original pressings”.

It’s explained further that each and every track on Usample’s website was originally made as library music for TV and film.

Usample says that some of the early releases on its website date back to the early 1960’s and 1970’s and that “these legacy works are highly sought after by crate diggers and record collectors alike”.

 

Universal’s new sample service is an interesting new addition to the wider sample library landscape. Only, there’s a catch. Usample is only accessible to major label affiliated artists.

The Recording Academy has added five new GRAMMY including Songwriter Of The Year, Americana Performance, Soundtrack For Video Games, and Song For Social Change along with fourteen rule and procedural changes.

All new category additions and rules go into effect immediately for the 2023 GRAMMYs.

One important change to note is the eligibility for Albums being considered for nomination.

According to the RIAA "To be eligible for GRAMMY Award consideration, an album must contain greater than 75 percent playing time of newly recorded (within five years of the release date), previously unreleased recordings*."

The previous eligibility rule was 50 percent. 

However, albums submitted in the categories of Best Compilation Soundtrack, Best Historical Album, Best Immersive Audio Album, Best Recording Package, Best Special Package, and Best Album Notes WILL accept albums that contain tracks that are not newly recorded.

What that means: TuneCore is – for the first time in history – enabling artists and labels to distribute an uncapped amount of music to services like Spotify and Apple Music each year for a single annual price.

TuneCore has historically charged artists under a price per-upload model, most recently at USD $9.99 per single, and $29.99 per album.

Spotify has launched a new interactive career advice portal for artists its calles In Focus.

The music streaming service says that the portal has been launched to “help artists and their teams achieve their career goals”.

On the ‘In Focus’ site, artists can choose from 21 ‘focus’ areas across five career categories defined by Spotify, including “create, promote, connect, earn, and learn”.

For each of these five categories, Spotify says that In Focus will “recommend the tools, resources, and educational materials to help them accomplish their goals and make the most out of every stage of their career”.

Spotify claims that the Spotify for Artists team “is on a mission to put artists at the center of the music industry, providing the tools and insights they need to build thriving fan bases on Spotify”.

The company cites other tools like its playlist submission tool, Canvas, and Soundtrap Capture app as all being “intended to put more control in the hands of artists”.

Despite the perceived notion that Dancehall is the dominating homegrown music export, a recent report by Caribbean based music metrics firm Certifiedstreams.com would beg to differ.

In its Industry overview report for Q1 2022, it was revealed that the shelf life of homegrown music has fallen significantly.

Homegrown Dancehall productions in the first quarter of 2022 saw an average shelf life of 11 days compared to Reggae productions which exhibited an average shelf life of 23.5 Days.

Though Dancehall releases for the period outpaced Reggae almost 9 to 1, Reggae releases were 4 times more likely to appear on Mainstream Music Charts charts than Dancehall releases.

Regardless of the differentials in numbers, Jamaican Homegrown music has been enjoying a fruitful year, with one of the largest collective contingencies of Reggae and Dancehall artists in the mainstream limelight since the early 90s.

Emerging acts such as Skillibeng, Skeng, Shenseea, and Shaniel Muir alongside seasoned veterans in the field such as Spice, Shaggy, and Sean Paul, have continued to make remarkable headways in mainstream media, and have been consistent in their musical delivery since the start of the year.

Certifiedstreams is the latest entrant to the music metrics space with a focus on Caribbean music data and operates 4 Official Music Charts, Reggaetop40.com, Dancehalltop40.com, Caribbeantop40.com, and Jamaicantop40.com.

Some interesting news out of China: Both of the region’s biggest music streaming providers, Tencent Music Entertainment (TME) and NetEase Cloud Music (NCM) saw significant growth in paying online music users in the first three months of 2022.

That’s ‘paying online music users’ rather than ‘subscribers’ because this specifically-worded metric – particularly relevant to TME – is adopted by both companies in their financials.

  • TME – owner of QQ MusicKugou Music, and Kuwo Music – offers music streaming subscriptions in addition to paid-for downloads;
  • NCM, meanwhile, offers two tiers of paid streaming subscription: (i) A standard tier at 8 RMB (approx USD $1.26) per month, which has limited offline ‘downloads’; and (ii) A ‘Vinyl VIP’ tier, at RMB 18 ($2.84) per month. This actually has nothing to do with vinyl (!) but offers ‘vinyl-quality’ streaming music and unlimited offline ‘downloads’.

According to newly-issued financial results analyzed by MBW, Tencent Music added 4.0 million paying music users quarter-on-quarter in Q1 2022, and added 19.3 million in comparison to the prior-year quarter.

Where these figures become particularly intriguing is when we compare them to Spotify‘s performance in the same time period (Q1 2022).

Spotify, remember, owns a minority stake in TME, and TME – in conjunction with Tencent Holdings – owns a minority stake in Spotify.

Spotify also doesn’t operate as a service in China.

McGhee’s career began as the Special Assistant to the Chief Operating Officer of the City of Atlanta.

At BME, McGhee helped to develop artists like Crime Mobb, Lil Scrappy, and Trillville, before joining Warner Bros Records as VP of A&R.

McGhee then launched Seventy 2 Music Consulting, a boutique management, marketing, and brand development firm, and most recently served as SVP at Roc Nation, where he signed Nicole Bus and was A&R for Jaden and Willow Smith.

Nick Love, meanwhile, joins ONErpm as Project Manager.

This week, Universal Music Group-owned distribution platform Spinnup revealed that it’s changing from an “open DIY music distribution service”, to a “curated artist discovery and distribution platform”.

In other words, Spinnup will soon be going invite-only, and will be reducing the number of artists using the platform.

Existing users were told of the change via email on Wednesday (May 18), and a notice on the Spinnup website confirms that “some artists” will now be leaving the platform. Those artists are being asked to take down their releases and transfer to a new distributor by July 19, 2022.

The move brings Spinnup’s business model closer to that of AWAL, the platform acquired by Sony Music last year.

UK music licensing company PPL has reported revenues of £252.8 million ($347.7m) for 2021, up 12%, or £27.1 million ($37.27m) YoY.

The company’s results for 2021 mark its second highest annual revenue total, after collecting £271.8 million in 2019.

PPL reports that it saw year-on-year growth across all three revenue streams in 2021, including International, Broadcast and online, and Public performance and dubbing1, with International and Broadcast, and online licensing revenues reaching record annual amounts.

PPL has 105 agreements with collective management organisations (CMOs) in Africa, Asia, Europe and North and South America and in 2021 established new deals with CMOs in India and Indonesia.

The company says that a number of CMOs sped up or brought forward payments in 2021, to support performers and recording rightsholders impacted by COVID-19, which, it says further contributed to 2021’s international revenue amount.

Reggae's performance for the first quarter of 2022 in the global music space generated just over 1 Billion Spotify Streams. Radio spins worldwide for the period between Jan-April 2022 hit 1.6 million spins, while on Youtube the genre clocked in 358 million views.

According to Spotify's latest Loud & Clear report, 7,600 Reggae artists globally are recognised as "professional or professionally aspiring". However, it must be noted that 33% of the streams accounted for were harvested by 1% of the artists, or just 76 of the globally recognised artists under the Reggae genre.

The Reggae genre umbrella includes five commercially recognised subgenres, namely Dancehall, Roots Reggae, Dub, Ska and Reggae Fusion, as reported by music metrics provider viberate.com.

Of the 20 commercially recognised super genres Reggae ranked at #20, a high cry from its peak at #12 just two years ago.

USA, Great Britain, Germany, France and Brazil remain the top 5 consumers of Reggae, yet the genre's Global Market Share dipped to 0.57% during Q1 2022 compared to 0.65% for the same period in 2021, which represents a 14% loss in its global market share.

This news does not reflect well for the homegrown industry(Jamaica) which represents 11% or 853 of the 7,600 globally recognized artists.

The assumption by some critics is that Reggae is losing its market share to #19 ranked African music, more specifically its sub-genre Afrobeat which has since the start of the year consistently delivered radio ready singles with big mainstream potential.

Others blame the loss on what some critics fingered as the "low quality" output of the new wave sound aptly called "Traphall", which many remarked has taken a tangent from the traditional expectations of Reggae and Dancehall consumers at home and aboard with its dark, Grime tinged, HipHop infused soundscape.

The Loud & Clear report revealed that only 16,500 artists on Spotify's platform generate over USD50,000 in annual royalties.

This number represents less than 10% of the 200,000 artists Spotify officially recognises as "professional or professionally inspiring". of which 165,000 have over 10,000 monthly listeners.

That 200,000 represents just over 2.0% of all total artists on the streaming platform.

But with just over 8,000,000 artists on its platform, 5.4 million artists have less than 10 songs in their catalogue.

So in essence, two-thirds of Spotify artists do not have enough material to fill a ten-track album, attract more than 10,000 listeners and earn over USD50,000 in annual royalities.

While the majority of this fight is between copyright owners and streaming services, since streaming makes up the bulk of today’s market, an important part of this proceeding is setting rates for physical product, CDs and vinyl, and downloads.

These ownership models have declined significantly over the years, but still encompass an important piece of the business.

In order to focus precious time and resources on the bigger streaming battle and avoid costly and risky litigation, it is advantageous for publishers, songwriters and labels to try to come to an agreement on their own, outside the proceeding, and due to the hard work and compelling voices of countless songwriters across the country, we have come to a settlement with an historic rate increase.

The agreement we have submitted to the court will give songwriters a 32% raise for what’s called “Subpart B” which comprises CDs, vinyl and downloads. The proposal would increase the royalty rate from 9.1 cents to 12 cents and include a yearly cost of living adjustment to address inflation. These increases would take effect for the years 2023-2027.
